Thanks to the National Park Service for this great photo!
If you are going to Port A in July and early August – it’s hatchling release time at the Padre Island National Seashore. To date 150 Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle nests have been found along the Texas coast, 4 on Mustang Island. The nests found at the Padre Island National Seashore and the coast north are held at the incubation facility at the park.
Here’s the link to the website for more info on the types of turtles found at the coast as well as the release dates – http://www.nps.gov/pais/naturescience/releases.htm You can call the Hatchling Hotline at (361) 949-7163 for the latest information on the release date, time, or location. Releases start between 6:30 and 6:45 pm in front of the Malaquite Beach Visitor Center.
Has anyone been present for one of these releases? I’d love to go someday!
